About স্থানীয় সরকার বিভাগ

The Local Government Division (LGD) is a key department under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives in Bangladesh. It is responsible for overseeing and managing the country’s local government institutions, including City Corporations, Municipalities (Pourashavas), Upazila Parishads, Union Parishads, and Zila Parishads.

The division’s core responsibilities include formulating policies, enacting laws and regulations related to local governance, monitoring and supervising local bodies, and ensuring transparency and accountability in local administration.

LGD works to enhance decentralization, promote citizen participation, and improve service delivery at the grassroots level. It coordinates development projects, allocates budgets to local bodies, and ensures their efficient implementation.

Several agencies operate under or in coordination with LGD, such as:

  • Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) – handles rural infrastructure.

  • Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) – manages water and sanitation.

  • National Institute of Local Government (NILG) – provides training and policy research.

  • WASA – operates in urban water and sewerage services.

The LGD faces challenges like corruption, weak institutional capacity, and delays in project implementation. Efforts are underway to improve transparency, introduce digital governance, and possibly form a new directorate to streamline local governance oversight.

Overall, the LGD plays a crucial role in fostering local development and participatory governance across Bangladesh.
