Despite pediatric infections being one of the leading causes of death and disability in Bangladesh, a vicious cycle persisted—limited resources led to little or no data on disease burden, which in turn hindered targeted interventions. Determined to break this cycle, renowned microbiologist Professor Samir K. Saha set out to create a virtuous alternative. He brought together a multidisciplinary team capable of maximizing the rational use of available resources to generate critical evidence. This vision led to the formal establishment of the Child Health Research Foundation (CHRF) in 2007, with the guiding motto: "Prevent infections, save lives."
Today, CHRF is home to a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of next-generation scientists, including clinicians, microbiologists, community health workers, technologists, and data scientists. With a network of five laboratories strategically placed in both urban and rural hospitals across Bangladesh, CHRF delivers low-cost diagnostic services to patients while providing real-time clinical data to hospital physicians to enhance patient care. This hospital-lab network is also part of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Invasive Bacterial Vaccine-Preventable Disease Surveillance Network, contributing to global efforts in infectious disease prevention.
