About Company
With hundreds of rivers flowing through its heart, it's no surprise that shipbuilding runs in the veins of Bangladesh. Dockyard and Engineering Works Limited (DEWL) began its humble journey in 1926 as "Narayanganj Dockyard Limited," marking the first shipyard in the Indian Subcontinent.
Over the course of a century, DEWL has weathered the transitions of British colonial rule, East Pakistan, and independent Bangladesh—consistently honing its shipbuilding expertise. Since being handed over to the Bangladesh Navy in 2006, the dockyard has experienced remarkable growth and continued success.
Spanning an area of 21.78 acres with a 900-foot riverfront, the facility can dock vessels weighing up to 1,500 tons (lightweight) and measuring up to 88.4 meters (290 feet) in length. Its annual steelwork production capacity is 2,070 tons. The shipyard includes 27,220 square meters of open space and 3,000 square meters of enclosed space dedicated to shipbuilding. Notably, 26% of the total area has been preserved for greenery, establishing it as an environmentally friendly and sustainable "green industry."
