Responsibilities & Context

Primary Objective

The Medical Doctor Supervisor ensures the delivery of high-quality outpatient and inpatient care in line with updated medical knowledge, MSF standards, protocols, and hygiene guidelines. The goal is to consistently improve the health outcomes of patients and beneficiaries under MSF's care.

This role is pivotal in overseeing clinical quality and patient safety across various specialties, especially in general medicine or in the absence of specific specialists. It involves close collaboration with nursing and medical teams, focusing on clinical supervision, capacity building, and maintaining strong quality assurance systems. This position requires substantial on-the-ground medical experience.

Core Responsibilities

Clinical Oversight & Supervision

  • Provide bedside consultations and practical guidance to other doctors, particularly in partnership with the pediatrician.

  • Offer clinical leadership and oversight to doctors in both outpatient and inpatient departments.

  • Step in to supervise other specialty areas when a pediatrician is unavailable.

  • Ensure proper patient documentation, registration, discharge, and referral procedures align with MSF standards.

Pharmacy & Treatment Standards

  • Collaborate with the NTS and pharmacy team to monitor stock and ensure efficient drug usage.

  • Promote rational use of antimicrobials and oversee regular prescription reviews in inpatient wards.

  • Uphold clinical and treatment protocols in all medical services, especially during the absence of a pediatrician.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work with the MAM and pediatrician to strengthen patient care delivery.

  • Monitor and support smooth patient flow from ER to different departments according to defined admission and discharge criteria.

  • Take part in ward rounds and coordinate clinical case discussions.

Technical Support

  • Assist in managing patient referrals according to agreed protocols.

  • Act as the point person for telemedicine and operational clinical research projects, where relevant.

  • Ensure infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols are followed and confidentiality is maintained at all times.

  • Work in direct coordination with the Nurse Team Supervisors.

Quality of Care Responsibilities

  • Serve as the focal point for quality of care initiatives within the project.

  • Support the MAM and NAM in developing and applying clinical quality improvement plans.

  • Oversee and report any adverse medical incidents.

  • Collaborate with the Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) focal person to ensure responsible antibiotic use—or act in that role when necessary.

  • Monitor, evaluate, and report on quality indicators in collaboration with the medical and nursing teams.

  • Participate in regular clinical review meetings to promote ongoing learning and quality assurance.

  • Liaise with the lab supervisor to ensure effective integration of lab and diagnostic services into clinical care.

Leadership, Training & Supervision

  • Assist the MAM in identifying training needs across the medical team, particularly in acute patient management.

  • Provide hands-on training, including direct observation and skill assessments.

  • Participate in clinical duty rotations, including weekend coverage when needed.

  • Directly manage the scheduling, attendance, and supervision of Medical Doctors under your responsibility.

Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and complete documentation of patient records and registers when requested by the MAM/PMR.

  • Support data collection, analysis, and reporting processes related to medical activities.

  • Contribute to the analysis of health data using tools such as DHIS or PRAXIS to support evidence-based decision-making.
